Education and Experience Necessary to Become a Parole Officer in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs-based job candidates and those living in the Southern Region will find that a bachelor’s degree is the minimum qualification to become a parole officer. This degree should be in business, criminal justice, law enforcement, or one of the behavioral sciences. Alternatively, if a candidate has work experience in counseling, law enforcement or social work, this may be substituted for the education requirement.

Training for Parole Officers in Colorado Springs

To become a parole officer in Colorado Springs, it is necessary to complete POST certification training and receive the Colorado Peace Officer Standards Training certificate. Basic law enforcement classes, firearms usage, self-defense and first aid/CPR knowledge are just some of the courses taught in POST training. In order to start POST training, candidates must pass oral exams, physical tests, lie detector tests and other exams.

Once hired, Colorado Springs parole officers must complete approximately 20 days of basic training. This is held at the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training Academy in Canon City.

Colorado Springs parole officers are expected to fulfill the yearly continuing education requirement of 40 hours. Certification in CPR and qualification in firearms also must be maintained in order to maintain a parole officer career in Colorado Springs.
